Cecile McLorin Salvant
Semifinalist of the 2010 Thelonious Monk Institute Vocals Competition
|
Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2010 - 6:11 PM
- Vocalist Cecile McLorin Salvant, 21, a native of Miami, Florida is among the semifinalists of the 2010 Thelonious Monk Institute vocals competition. We had the privilege to see her live performance at the Van Dyke Café in Miami Beach last December. Here is part of Alpi’s impressions at that time. ”Listening to Cecile singing reminds of myriad of sounds, tones, colors and words that jazz aficionados held in their sub conscious for years and yet, they appeared, that night, as it was the first time they were being played or said because of her inner skills of turning old words into new sounds”. She enjoys growing popularity in France and Switzerland and was semifinalist at Crest Vocal Jazz Competition.
The Semifinals of the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocals Competition will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 3 at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian. Three finalists will be selected to perform with a group of jazz all-stars at Monday’s Kennedy Center concert, followed by the awards announcement.

Near By
Rodrigue Georges & Horizon
|
Tuesday, July 26, 2010 - 7:15 PM
- Montreal based Guitarist Rodrigue Georges just released his latest album entitled “Near By”. Born in Haiti, he was exposed early to the music of his mentors: Joe Pass, West Montgomery, Georges Benson, Dadou Pasquet and Norman Brown.
As one can expect, his playing exhibits nuances and colors acquired from a culture of this longtime passion for the music of these stellar figures. This talented Smooth Jazz guitarist reveals exceptional skills, and his passion fuels the album track after track. Rodrigue works on a large palette of rhythms and grooves, easily recognizable to jazz aficionados. Even though he claims influences and inspiration from other jazz icons, he already crafted his own blending sounds and techniques to create a remarkable musical identity.
With his new band Horizon, the guitarist seems to add another set of new pieces to the Kreyòl Jazz registry by bridging the popular genres of the Caribbean to Jazz and the well-like R&B.

A Multi-Color Dream
The pursuance of an interrupted conversation
|
Monday
March 9, 2009, 9:10 A.M.
- Guitarist Bemol Telfort launches his third album entitled A "Multi-Color Dream". Carved in the same stone as his first project “The Good News is The Bad News Was Wrong”, this album reiterates a powerful statement about the guitarist’s magic touch in turning song from our traditional repertoire into masterpieces as exemplified by the rendering of the popular Haitian tune Mèsi Bondye.
According to my first impressions, the whole album is about exploring these octaves with a twist of Montgomery’s colors to bring to the next level those melodies, licks and solos that personalize his approach, make his music so unique and his sound so distinctive.
Chapeau Mr B!

Uncovering
the Rich and Complex Musical
World of
Jean Michel Clermont
From konpa Jazz to Post Modernism
|
Sunday
March 23, 2008 11:00 A.M.
- Finally I am able to put a
face on this name. This meeting
is important because it is going
to give me access to the world
of one of our most secret and
prolific composer. I joined
Jean Michel at his hotel located
on A1A in Fort Lauderdale. After
some hugs and greetings we convene
to have a morning drink at the
nearest Starbucks Coffee.
Once we got the drinks, we went
back to his car and my journey
into his world started. As a
composer, JMC is so versatile
and complex that I was speechless.
His music is rich. It expresses
so well the diversity of our
culture from Konpa Jazz (Bazilik
and Magnum Band's style) to
what he calls a certain "post
modernism" of the Haitian Musical
Experience. This latter style
blew my mind. This is music
written for a 16 to 25 piece
orchestra... One can feel that
the composer is inspired by
Monk and Mingus. I did not know
he was a "Monkoholic". No wonder
his love for complex polyrhythmic
arrangements. The music is tight,
dynamic and surprisingly beautiful
and the best of all, it describes
a certain Haitian identity in
the "Foula" and "Lakou" tradition.
At KariJazz, we LOVE that kind
of music.
We had a lot of fun and when
the time to say bye came, we
both figured out that hours
have elapsed. We will be talking
more about this music. It cannot
stay in JMC's drawers. KariJazz
wants also to congratulate Jean
Michel on his future performances
at Borders. For more information

Reginald
Policard New Project
Changing
Mood
When the "Yanvalou" meets
the "Blues"
|
|
Saturday
March 22, 2008 2:00 P.M.
- It is raining hard on Miami.
I drove to Hialeah to meet Reginald
Policard at Sound Booth Corp
where its latest project "Changing
Mood" is being mixed. I got
there a little bit after 2 o'clock
and the pianist introduced me
to Francisco Miret, the magician
who is helping with the mixing.
I sat down for about three hours
watching them work on some pieces
and it was great to witness
for the first time this process.
The CD should be ready in about
a month. According to Reginald,
it should be out by late spring
or early summer. This album
will confirm the "Detour" in
his career's orientation because
the artist is venturing more
into the Jazz World and continues
to explore multiple styles in
the genre. As he explained himself:
"The pieces on this album are
so different one from each other
that I finally chose the title
to reflect that diversity."
We cannot wait to listen to
the final product. We will announce
the release date soon.
